It Wasn't You

About 14 years ago, Hoyt & I wrote this little song titled 'It Wasn't You' one quiet Sunday evening back in 1998. Strangely enough, we never even officially demoed it until this week. I was going through some old song lyrics lately and opened up an old tablet and this song just kinda jumped right out at me. I thought that the lyrics were very profound. Honestly, I had to really dig deep to remember the vocal melody line but once I did it all just came rushing back to me. So jumped in front of the mic and just recorded it.

I remember very distinctly that just after we wrote this song we both had decided that 'It Wasn't You' would be perfect fit for Cyndi Lauper. (Or maybe even an E.G. Daily type vocalist.) We put our best Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg hats on and got busy trying to find all the right contact information for Cyndi's management team. But back then all we had was an old Tascam 4 Track recorder laying around and was afraid that the demo that we could produce wouldn't be 'pro' enough to submit to an artist or a label. So most regrettably, we put the song down and just continued writing more songs.

Well fourteen years later, I decided it was time to blow the dust off of it and give this song a life. With this simple straight forward piano & vocal arrangement the song now can finally be heard.
~ Thanks for tuning in, Carly

Words & Music By Carly Emerick & Hoyt Emerick

Verse 1:
It wasn't you that kept me lonely
It wasn't you for which I cried
And it wasn't on the mornings that I woke up sick
and my heart just could have died, oh no

Verse 2:
It wasn't you who kept me prisoner
I know now after all of these years
That it wasn't you that I was missing
But the way that I felt when you were here,
when you were here

Chorus:
It wasn't you that I came rushing home to
You that I thought of every minute of the day
It wasn't you but a dream I would have died for
and when I look back and ask myself the truth
It wasn't you

Verse 2:
It wasn't you who bought me flowers
It wasn't you who made me smile
And it wasn't you who got me through the tough times
and I realize it now, I realize now

(Repeat Chorus)

Bridge:
I know that love's an illusion but I wish I was wrong
We convince ourselves to thinking that it's real all along
And now that my eyes are open I know you'll never see
that everything you thought I did for us I did for me

(Repeat Chorus)
